Admission Criteria for Professional Program

Admission to MUOT by the University of Missouri-Columbia.
A minimum of 3.0 CUM GPA is required for acceptance as a pre-OT major. Transfer Acceptance: All transfer requests are considered on the basis of CUM GPA.

*GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale of ALL undergraduate coursework is required to qualify for application to the department.

Repeated Courses: If a course is repeated both grades earned are included in the CUM GPA. If one of the required courses is repeated the higher grade is accepted.

CLEP/Advanced Placement Scores: CLEP and Advanced Placement scores are accepted in accordance with the University and SHP policies. Students who have completed less than 90 credits may complete course requirements through CLEP or AP testing.

Pass/Fail grades: Pass/fail grades are acceptable except for the prerequisite science courses. The OT academic advisor should be consulted.

SCIENCES
Required sciences include Physiology w lab (3.0 or better) and Physics with lab(2.0 or better), and Sociology or Anthropology. The required science courses must have been completed within 10 years.

College Physics (Physics 1210) with a minimum grade of "C" (2.0).

Required courses may be in progress during the application. However all prerequisites must be completed prior to entering into the Professional Program (beginning with the summer Gross Anatomy Course).

Science Course Waiver: Consult an OT academic advisor for waiver consideration prior to application deadline if you have concerns regarding the required science courses .

MINIMUM 58-60 Prerequisite Credits are to be completed before submitting an application for the professional program of the Department of Occupational Therapy.

Consult an advisor on prerequisites required prior to applying.

A grade of at least a (C) 2.0 on a 4.0 grading scale or better must be earned in following prerequisites: Human Development, Statistics, and Abnormal Psychology.

Advanced science or behavioral science grades may not be substituted for 1 of the prerequisite course grades to compensate for a lower grade awarded in the prerequisite course.

Completed Baccalaureate Degree:

The cumulative GPA for an applicant who has completed a baccalaureate degree may be calculated either on all undergraduate credit or on the last 60 undergraduate credits earned.

Only graduate coursework completed to fulfill a specific undergraduate program prerequisite will be calculated in a cumulative GPA for application purposes.

All general education requirements and prerequisites must be completed prior to enrolling in the Summer Anatomy course.

Transcript Evaluation.

Transfer credits are evaluated only by the Office of the Associate Director of Health Professions.

A Transcript Evaluation Form must be completed by this office (573)882-8012 and included with MUOT application.

Minimum of thirty (30) hours of Occupational Therapy Observation
-
As part of the application process for the Department of Occupational Therapy a minimum of 30 hours of clinical observations in occupational therapy treatment settings.

Possible facilities where OT observations could take place would be nursing homes, hospitals, public schools, mental health facilities, rehabilitation agencies, community based programs.

Hours of observation must be documented and signed by a registered/licensed Occupational Therapist. Documentation should include dates, facility, setting & hours observed. See OBSERVATION FORM (pdf format)

*ACTIVITIES. Sustained volunteering and community service involvement activities are rated as part of the application process. The activities are weighted in preference of occupational therapy volunteer/work experiences, experiences with people with special needs, volunteering in community or campus organizations, religion, and civic community projects. Activities demonstrating leadership skills are also weighted.

*References . The required reference forms are included in the Application Packet. Three individuals (not relatives) must be contacted and provided a reference form from the Application Packet.

OT professional phase students are expected to enroll in the full course load each semester. A deceleration program is only under special circumstances & requires department approval. Preference is given to Missouri residents and MU students
