SHP Undergraduate Research Mentorship Program

Link to MU's Office of Undergraduate Research

The SHP Undergraduate Research Mentorship Program was developed to encourage SHP undergraduate students to explore research under the guidance of a faculty member. Students who are accepted into the Program agree to work on the research project a minimum of 6 hours per week over a 16-week period (the equivalent of a full semester). In addition, they are required to prepare and present a poster for a University-sponsored forum of undergraduate research. Many students choose to present their work at the Undergraduate Research Conference. Others have been offered the opportunity to be Ambassadors for Research Day at the Missouri State Capitol. Some students, in addition to their University presentation, choose to present at regional and national conferences.

Eligibility: SHP students who have entered a professional program are eligible to apply for this opportunity. Those interested in applying should contact a faculty member to discuss the possibility of working on a project together. The student may approach the faculty member with a research idea in mind, or the faculty member may suggest an idea or project that would be suitable for the experience.

Pay: Students are awarded a stipend of $500 for their participation in the Program.

Deadline: Applications are due each September, and awards are made in October. The start- and end-dates of the 16-week research commitment are set by the individual faculty mentor and student, but students generally begin their research in the Fall semester.

Contact: For more information about the program, contact Joyce Pfaff at the School of Health Professions, Office of Research.

Attention students! Explore research by applying for the Undergraduate Research Mentorship Award with a faculty member! SHP students can apply with a faculty member for undergraduate research mentorship awards of $500 for 16 weeks (1 semester) to work on a research project together.

Who can apply? Any undergraduate SHP student who has entered a professional program.

How do I apply? Begin by contacting a SHP faculty member to discuss research mentorship possibilities. Then obtain an application online, and develop a brief proposal with your mentor, detailing your idea.

When do I apply? Applications for each academic year are available in late August. They are due in September, and awards are made in October. Specific dates for the competition will be announced over the Summer. Applications will be available online in late Summer on the Office of Research Website.

What are the expectations for students who are selected? You are expected to work on the project a minimum of 6 hours per week over the 16-week experience. This time allotment includes regular meetings with the faculty mentor. In addition, you are expected to complete and present a poster representing your work. You are required to present your poster at a University-sponsored poster presentation. You may opt to present your work in more than one forum. Your mentor will help you identify presentation possibilities, develop your poster, and prepare for the presentation.

How is the stipend paid? The stipend of $500 will be deposited directly into the SHP students account.

For more information about the program, contact Joyce Pfaff at the School of Health Professions, Office of Research (573) 884-9496.

School of Health Professions students have been selected for several competitive research opportunities:

University of Missouri Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol
Students develop a poster with their mentor and present their research project to their legislators in Jefferson City. This year, only 16 students across campus were selected for this opportunity. Of those, two students were from SHP:

Angela Heckman (mentor - Sandy Matsuda, Occupational Therapy)
Kimberly Wilt (mentor - Stacy Wagovich, Comm. Science & Disorders)

MU Undergraduate Research Scholars
Students propose a project and are given a stipend to complete an intense, year-long research experience under the guidance of a University researcher. Students from all over campus competed for this award, only 12 of whom were ultimately selected. Of those, two were from SHP:

Victoria Gormley (mentor - Erin Dannecker, Physical Therapy)
Mallory Wood (mentor - Stacy Wagovich, Comm. Science & Disorders)

School of Health Professions Research Mentorship Program
The School of Health Professions supports undergraduate students in a pre-professional program who have an interest in working on a research project with a mentor. This year, 4 students were selected for this opportunity:

Rebecca Ansley (mentor - Barry Slansky, Comm. Science & Disorders)
Felicity Cunningham (mentor - Glen Heggie, Nuclear Medicine)
Kelly Farris (mentor - Dana Fritz, Comm. Science & Disorders)
Kimberly Wilt (mentor - Stacy Wagovich, Comm. Science & Disorders)
