Physical Therapy Advising at MU
Admission:
Admission to the DPT program is available through Regular Admission (applicants will have a bachelor's degree prior to beginning the professional program or three Early Admission options that allow students to enter the professional program with 90 credit hours. All applicants must have successfully completed the core required courses. Students who enter without a bachelor's degree also must have satisfied the MU general education and graduation requirements and taken two Writing Intensive courses. Students who are admitted without a degree will receive a bachelor's degree at completion of the first year. Applications are due in January and applicants are notified of the selection committee's decision in February. All students are strongly encouraged to contact the School of Health Professions Student Affairs Office for advisement and planning well in advance of application to PT.
Professional Program:
The DPT degree is an entry-level clinical degree that prepares the student to enter the field of physical therapy as a general practitioner with a background in musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiovascular/pulmonary and integumentary systems. The professional program is offered in sequential blocks and requires full-time enrollment for three academic years and three summer sessions, beginning in the summer session following acceptance. The curriculum contains foundational and clinical sciences combining traditional lectures and course work, laboratory sessions, problem-based learning classes and clinical education. A graduate must pass the National Physical Therapy Examination to receive a license to practice. MU PT graduates have a 100% pass rate over the last five years.
Frequently Asked Questions
|
Q: Does it matter where I take the core required courses?
A: You may take the core required courses at any accredited college or University. Check specific core required courses and suggestions for number of credit hours for each.
Q: I already have a degree. How do I figure my GPA for admission?
A: If you already have a degree, the GPA for your application is calculated from the last 60 hours of completed and graded college course work. If the 60 hours occurs within a semester, the entire semester will be used for the calculation. You must have at least a 3.0 GPA to be eligible to apply.
Q: Can I take courses elsewhere and transfer to MU without a degree to start PT school immediately?
A: It is unlikely that you would be able to satisfy all requirements for Early Admission without being enrolled at MU for at least a semester or two. In addition to the core required courses, Early Admission options require completion of MU general education and graduation requirements as well as two Writing Intensive (WI) courses on this campus. (Transfer students with an Associate Degree are able to waive one of the WI courses).
