Helpful Hints for your PT Application
:

-Aim for a combined verbal and quantitative GRE score of 1000 or above. While there is no minimum GRE score requirement, 1000 is a competitive score. Register for the GRE through MU Testing Services (573.882.4801).

-Get involved in organizations and/or activities on campus and throughout the community. There are many benefits to this, such as meeting new people and developing new skills. Also, these are the kinds of things you will include in your application.

-If your schedule allows, take more science classes than are required if that is a strong area for you. It will show the PT faculty that you have an interest and are strong in this area, which is very relevant to PT coursework and training.

-The more observation you do, the better. Be sure to observe at various facilities. This will give you more knowledge about what PT's do, their varied work environments and the differences between populations they serve.

-Prepare for your PT interview by attending the PT Open House in the Fall and meeting with current PT students. Student Council also typically has an interview preparation session during Spring semester meetings.

-Meet with a PT faculty advisor! They are excellent resources for information regarding the application process, the DPT program here at MU and the field of PT.

Questions? Please contact Jill Diener, Academic Advisor in the School of Health Professions at dienerjs@health.missouri.edu or 573.882.8011.

To set up an advising appointment with a PT faculty advisor, please call 573.882.7103.

Declaring a Major
Pre-PT is not an undergraduate major

Why can't my major be pre-PT?
The DPT program at MU is a graduate program leading to a clinical doctorate. As with students who are pre-Med or pre-Law, students interested in PT must work toward a degree while completing requirements to be eligible to apply to the DPT program.

What should my major be?
This is a personal decision that should be based upon your interests and goals. Students interested in applying to the DPT program may pursue any major and there is no preference to which major students seek. Common majors pursued by students interested in PT include Nutrition and Fitness, Psychology, Biological Science and Business. The more closely your major is related to PT, the more requirements they will have in common. However, it's important to pursue something you like because you are more likely to do well in courses that you enjoy. You may view a list of undergraduate majors as well as information about each major at http://majors.missouri.edu .

When should I declare my major?
You must formally declare a major by the later of the following two milestones: the end of your 4th college semester or once you have completed 42 college credit hours.

How do I declare my major?
You must meet with an advisor in the area of your major and fill out a Transfer of Division form to declare your major. It is strongly suggested that you add the School of Health Professions (SHP) as a Secondary Academic Unit on your Transfer of Division application so that you will still receive important information from SHP regarding events, important opportunities and advisement.

May I still receive advisement in SHP?
Absolutely! You should still seek advisement relating to PT in SHP. However, you must also be advised in your Primary Academic Unit regarding requirements for your major.
