Communication Science & Disorders

The MU Speech and Hearing Clinic located on the campus of the University of Missouri-Columbia was established over 50 years ago.  We provide a full range of clinical services to individuals with communication disorders.  This clinic is housed within the Department of Communication Science and Disorders.  The academic program, a vital resource of the MU Speech and Hearing Clinic, is accredited by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association's Educational Standards Board.

Services Available in the Speech and Hearing Clinic

The Speech and Hearing Clinic offers the following comprehensive speech-language and hearing services to children and adults in mid-Missouri  (graduate students supervised by certified faculty serve as clinicians):

-Diagnostic Services:   Speech and language diagnostic services include examination of the speech mechanism, assessment of articulation and phonological development, assessment of fluency and voice, as well as assessment of general communication skills.  Swallowing may also be evaluated.

-Individual Therapy:   Individual sessions are available for children and adults to address communication problems associated with a variety of etiologial conditions such as autism, cerebral palsy, hearing impairment, stroke, traumatic brain injury, language learning disability, language delays, developmental disability, stuttering, neurogenic or progressive neurological disorders.

- Robert G. Combs Language Preschool:   Children aged 3-5 years with speech-language problems and typically developing children attend this Scottish Rite sponsored preschool.  Seniors and graduate students in the Department of Communication Science and Disorders serve as clinicians in this small group, language intensive preschool.

-Accent Modification Program: Program to help reduce or modify accents for communication opportunities.
