11/1110 Manual Communication I (3).  Introduction to the English-based sign system, Signed English, a system that has been developed to bridge the gap between English and American Sign Language.  Graded on S/U basis only.

12/1120 Manual Communication II (3).  Continued vocabulary development and introduction of American Sign Language syntax and morphology.  Prerequisite: 1110 or instructor's consent.

20/1060 Human Language (3).  General introduction to various aspects of linguistic study.  Elementary analysis of language data with some attention to application of linguistic study to other disciplines.

120/2120 Survey of Communicative Disorders (3).  Systematic survey of the disorders of speech, language, and hearing.

200/4950 Research Apprenticeship (cr. arr.).  Research apprenticeship with a faculty member, assisting in the development and execution of research in communication processes and disorders.  May be repeated to 6 hrs. maximum.  Prerequisite: instructor's consent.

201/3010 American Phonetics (3).  Analysis of sounds of Midwestern American dialect.  Standards of pronunciation, feature analysis, transcription, articulation, mechanics, coarticulation.  Prerequisite: departmental consent.

202/3020 Normal Language Development (3).  Language development in preschool and school-age children.  Cognition and language, developmental sequences, language learning processes, language sample analysis and the relationship between spoken and written language.  Prerequisite: Linguistics/English 4600 or instructor's consent.

210/3210 Anatomy and Physiology of the Speech Mechanism (3).  Introduction to anatomical, functional aspects of speech mechanism.  Prerequisite: departmental consent.

230/3230 Hearing Science (3).  Anatomy and physiology of the auditory and vestibular systems in health and disease.  Also includes acoustics, measurement of sound, and psychoacoustics.  Prerequisite: departmental consent.

243/4430/7430 Applied Neurophysiology (3).  Principles of normal neurophysiology, emphasizing correlation of structure and function of the nervous system.

301/4001 Topics in Communicative Disorders (cr. arr.).  Organized study of selected topics.  Subjects and earnable credit vary from semester to semester.  May be repeated with department consent.  Prerequisites: junior standing and instructor's consent.

302/4020 Language Disorders in Children (3).  Investigation of atypical language development in specifically language-impaired, learning-disabled, hearing-impaired, autistic and developmentally disabled children with particular attention to assessment and intervention procedures.  Prerequisites: 2120, 3020, Linguistics 4600, and departmental consent.

303/4030 Language Disorders of Adults (2).  Introduction to disorders of language that occur in the adult population.  Basic review of neuroanatomy/physiology, etiologies, symptomatology.  Major emphasis will be placed on assessment and treatment.  Prerequisites: 120, 202, Linguistics 340 and departmental consent.

320/4320 Disorders of Phonology and Articulation (3).  Nature, cause, assessment, and treatment of speech sound disorders.  Prerequisites: 2120, ,3010, 3020, 3210 and departmental consent.

321/4210 Fluency and Voice Disorders (2).  Investigation of fluency and voice disorders in children and adults with particular attention to identification procedures and clinical management techniques.

324/4900  Clinical Observation (1-3).  Directed clinical observations designed to prepare the student for clinical practicum.   S/U graded only.  CSD majors only.  Prerequisites: senior standing and departmental consent.

334/4340 Aural Rehabilitation (3).  Identification, evaluation, and management of problems associated with hearing impairment in both children and adults.  Includes issues related to speech/language development, communication, education and social factors.  Prerequisites: 3230 and 4330.

342/4420/7420 Reading and Language Disabilities in School-Age Children (3).  Theories, research, and practice in reading development and disorders.  Focus on reading disabilities related to language disorders of various etiologies including developmental language disorders and head injury.  Assessment, remediation, teaching methods.

343/4500/7500 Issues in Professional Practice (3).  Organizational, interprofessional, economic, legal, and ethical aspects of delivering speech, language, and hearing services.

381/4810/7810 Psycholinguistics (3).  Examines the knowledge and processes that underlie the human ability to produce and understand language.  Prerequisite: Senior or graduate standing.

382/4820/7820 Speech Perception (3).  Selected topics in the perceptual processing of spoken language.  Prerequisite: Senior or graduate standing.

400/7085/8085 Problems in Communicative Disorders (cr. arr.).  Individual study not leading to thesis or dissertation.  Prerequisite: instructor's consent.

402/8020 Developmental Language Disorders (3).  Nature, etiology, assessment and management of childhood language disorders.  Prerequisites: 202, 302 and instructor's consent.

403/8030 Acquired Language Disorders (3).  Primary emphasis on etiology, symtomatology, assessment and management of acquired aphasia in adults.  Also addressed are the communicative deficits associated with traumatic brain injury, right hemisphere damage, and dementia.  Prerequisites: 3020, 4030, Linguistics 4600 or equivalent, or instructor's consent.

411/8110 Speech Physiology (3).  (Same as Linguistics 411).  Analysis of physiological features associated with speech subsystems; theories of encoding with special emphasis on speech motor control mechanisms.  Prerequisites: 3010 and 3210, or instructor's consent.

412/8120 Speech Acoustics (3).  Analysis of acoustic and perceptual characteristics of speech including computer- based acoustical processing techniques.  Prerequisites: 3010 and 4320, or instructor's consent.

420/8200 Motor Speech Disorders (3) A systematic study of disorders of motor speech control (dysarthria, apraxia) which result from damage to the human nervous system. Emphasis on etiology, symtolatology, assessment and treatment. Prerequisites: 3210 and 4320 or instructor's consent.

421/8210 Fluency Disorders (2).  Identification and remediation of fluency disorders in children and adults.  Includes comprehensive reviews of the various theories, systems of assessment and approaches to clinical management.  Focus is on stuttering, but cluttering and palilalia are also addressed.  Prerequisites: 3210 and 4210, or instructor's consent.

422/8220 Voice Disorders (2).  Prerequisites: 3210, 4320, and 4210, or instructor's consent.

423/8230 Dysphagia (2).  Diagnosis and treatment of swallowing disorders, including video-fluoroscopic analysis.  Focus is on acquired dysphagia in adults, but developmental dysphagia is also addressed.  Prerequisites: 3210, 4210, 8200, or instructor's consent.

424/8240 Orofacial Anomalies (1). Prerequisite: departmental consent.

425/8945 Clinical Practice in Speech-Language Pathology (3-4).  Supervised clinical practice in speech pathology for graduate students.  May be repeated for credit.  Prerequisites: departmental consent.

426/8260 Diagnosis in Speech-Language Pathology (3).  General principles of diagnosis; specific diagnostic tools and procedures for various speech and language disorders.  Prerequisite: departmental consent.
