First Year Courses
The following are courses deciding students should plan to take their first year, with some possible variations given the student's background, interests and ability. There are pre-requisites for some courses, as well as important differences between some of the math, science and behavioral science courses. All MU Students must satisfy General Education requirements. In addition to the General Education requirements, HP students must also fulfill pre-requisites for their intended programs. General education courses and pre-requisites may overlap. Students should always check with an advisor to determine which courses are appropriate.

-Math 1100 or 1120, College Algebra (check with your advisor)
-Biology 1010 and 1020 or Biology 1500 (check with your advisor)
-Chemistry 1310 or 1320 or Chemistry 1100 (check with your advisor)
-History 1100 or 1200
-English 1000
-At least one humanities course (Communication 1200 is strongly recommended)

-Psychology 1000/Rural Sociology 1000/Sociology 1000/Anthropology 1000

Classes Designed for Career Exploration
The following are courses designed to help you explore majors and determine your strengths and interests. They are recommended for freshmen, but are not restricted to freshmen enrollment.

HP 1000, Introduction to Health Professions (1 cr hour)
HP 1000 is an overview of the health professions and a good class for anyone interested in working in health care. Class includes guest speakers, reflection writing assignments and quizzes. This class is offered the first eight weeks of the fall semester.

Communication Science and Disorders, Intro to CSD (1 cr hour)
Nature of communication and its development; types of speech, language and hearing disorders; professional preparation, settings and work of speech-language pathologists and audiologists.

Nuclear Medicine 1000, Intro to NM (1 cr hour)
An overview using a series of short rotations through local nuclear medicine departments and a self-directed review of a current text. Clinical rotations for this course are arranged on an individual basis. Graded on S/U basis only.

Occupational Therapy 1000, Intro to OT (1cr hour)
Introductory course to provide students information about the occupational therapy profession. Registered therapists lecture on clinical aspects. Students participate in discussions on program requirements, placement, and trends in profession.

Physical Therapy 1000, Intro to Physical Therapy (1 cr hour)
Acquaints students with the physical therapy profession including the required educational preparation, practice settings, sample interventions, current issues, trends and research. Graded on a S/U basis only.

Respiratory Therapy 1000, Intro to RT (1 cr hour)
Introductory course to assist students acquiring information about the respiratory therapy profession. Students observe therapists in hospitals and participate in lectures on credentialing, program requirements, placement and future trends in the profession. Graded on S/U basis only.

SSC 2100, Career Explorations (1 cr hour)
Contribution of career development theory to choice of career and /or major. Exploration of personal and social determinants of career choice. Class consists of lecture, laboratory experience, and use of facilities at the Career Planning and Placement Center.

Ed School and Counseling Psych 2100, Career Explorations (3 cr hrs)
This course differs from the one-hour Career Explorations course in that it covers more in-depth theory and requires more writing and assignments. Students should check with their advisor to determine if the one-hour or three-hour Career Explorations course is appropriate.

Student Success Center
The MU Student Success Center houses the Academic Exploration and Advising Services Office. Students can explore career opportunities, majors and courses required for all majors on the MU campus.
